What are the Different Types of HVAC Unit?

Although HVAC is a common term to homeowners, not all of them fully understand what the term really means. If you are still confused about what the term HVAC, or HVAC unit means, read on.

What is HVAC?

HVAC is an acronym for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. It refers mainly to the systems used to keep an indoor or outdoor area cool or warm depending on the season or on what is needed.

What is an HVAC System?

An HVAC system is a mechanical system designed to provide thermal comfort and quality indoor air to occupants of a residential or commercial unit. The system is not only about heating and cooling but also about ventilation. By using fresh air from outdoors, it provides better quality air indoors. “Better air quality” refers to filtered air, which means that the system filters the air by removing dust, smoke, airborne bacteria, odors, and carbon dioxide.

What are the Types of HVAC System?

There are different types of HVAC units available on the market. Each type has a number of benefits, as well as some disadvantages. The following are the four types of HVAC system:

·        Split Systems – Heating and Cooling

A heating and cooling split system is the most common type of HVAC system. The system is composed of two main units, one for heating and another one for cooling. In addition, this type of system also has units placed outside the house.

·        Hybrid System

Similar to the split system, this type of system has the ability to reduce energy consumption because of its hybrid heating system. The user or owner can switch the system between gas power and electric power. It uses thermostats and ducts.

·        Duct-Free System – Mini Split

A duct-free type system is very costly. However, it can provide more benefits depending on application. It is usually composed of HVAC units placed indoors, preferably mounted on walls, and an outdoor compressor.

·        Packaged Heating and Air Conditioning System

This is the most niche type of HVAC system. It is easy to maintain because of its compact size. Although the heating system is not as powerful as that of other systems, its cooling system is very efficient. Homeowners also prefer to use this system because the units can use electrical power, gas power, or both to reduce electrical consumption.

What are the Most Important Parts of Your HVAC Unit?

It can be helpful in keeping and maintaining your HVAC unit to understand the importance and functions of its parts.

·        Thermostat

This allows users to control the unit based on temperature and needs.

·        Combustion chamber

Also called a burner, this burns the furnace in a controlled fire using the combined air and gas.

·        Blower motor

This powers the fan and blows the warm air into the duct.

·        Evaporator coil

This absorbs heat and cools down the room by blowing warm air out.

·        Heat exchanger

This is a major component of the unit because it has stainless steel that can resist temperature.

·        Condenser coil or compressor

Usually installed outdoors, this compresses and condenses the refrigerant and disperses the heat away from the room.
