Air-Conditioner Repair

A DIY air-conditioner repair might be dangerous for complex issues. However, sometimes your AC is malfunctioning only due to minor errors that you can resolve without much effort. Here are a few simple tricks that are worth trying before calling for professional help.

1.   Reset the Thermostat

If your AC unit is blowing warm air or not blowing at all, the first thing you need to check is your thermostat. Resetting it might resolve the issue sometimes. There is also a chance that your thermostat is malfunctioning due to a low battery. A simple battery replacement should do the trick. If your thermostat is old, it might be time to get a new device.

2.   Melt the Ice, If Any

Frozen coils are another common air-conditioner repair problem. If this is the case, you need to turn the system off and wait for the ice to melt on its own. Blowing the ice with fans can speed up the process, but do not use a hairdryer or any other harsh methods. Once the ice completely melts, try turning your AC unit on again to see if it works properly.

3.   Replace the Air Filter

Dirt buildup in your air filter may cause poor airflow and inefficiency. Ideally, air filters need to be replaced every six months, or even sooner if your indoor air quality is low. If it has been a while since you changed the air filters, then replacing them might allow your system to operate properly again.

4.   Check the Breaker

If your air conditioner will not turn on at all, there is probably some kind of issue with the electricity. Besides checking the wiring, you can also inspect the circuit breaker. It might just be a tripped breaker. If this is the case, replacing it with a new one will allow your AC unit to turn back on. However, do not attempt this if you do not understand how a circuit breaker works. Doing it wrong may cause a short-circuit or even a fire.

5.   Clean Up

Dirt buildup may cause poor AC performance. If it has been a while since you cleaned your air conditioning unit, then you might need to give it a proper cleaning at this point. Both the outdoor and indoor units require cleaning.

If you are not sure how to do it without damaging the units, it is better to leave it to professionals. Ideally, cleaning is listed on a regular maintenance checklist. Talk to your HVAC technician to schedule maintenance if you haven’t done so yet.

Although these tricks may seem simple, it is better not to try them if you are not sure how to do it right. And if these tricks don’t solve your problems, it is time to call an HVAC company for further inspection and professional repair.

Do not continue trying to fix it yourself because you might make the problem worse or cause further issues. It is also important to only hire a reputable HVAC service company for your air-conditioner repair. Otherwise, you might end up with more problems in the future.
