Should You Replace Your AC Unit?

Your AC unit is an essential part of your home life, especially during summer. You need the system to be working properly during that crucial time, or else your family will suffer through the utmost discomfort. So, should you replace your AC unit if you’re experiencing issues?

In normal conditions, an AC unit may last many years. But, just like any other appliance, it also has a lifespan. At some point, your air conditioning system will no longer be able to keep your house comfortable. At this time, you may need a total replacement.

Below are some signs that you need to replace your AC unit:

It Is Old Enough

Different types of AC units have different lifespans. But in general, they last around 10-15 years. If you’ve had your AC unit that long, then maybe it is already near its end. Even worse, the unit’s lifespan can be shorter than it should if you don’t give it regular maintenance and tune-ups. How often you use your AC and how hot and humid the weather is in your area may also affect the unit’s lifespan.

Burnt Smell in the Output Air

If the air your AC sends out has a strange burning smell, then this might indicate a faulty motor. This problem may lead to overheating and is unlikely to be repairable. Even if you can repair it, motor replacement might be quite expensive, and your system will not work as well as it used to anyway. Hence, a total unit replacement might be a better choice.

A Surge on Your Energy Bills

You may notice that the electricity bills you receive are increasing even though your energy consumption has stayed the same. In this case, it is probably because your AC is not working properly. An aging machine tends to need more energy to deliver the same results. This  inefficiency will cause you to spend more money in the long run. Thus, it is better to invest in a new unit.

AC is Not as Cool as It Used to Be

Your AC is failing to get the job done. The airflow that comes out can no longer cool down the room like it used to. Of course, there are several possibilities in this situation. Some cases are fixable, such as low refrigerant or dirty filters. But sometimes, it is something fatal, such as a deteriorating motor or overall degradation.

AC Keeps Breaking

Another thing indicating that your AC unit is nearing the end of its time is frequent breaking. You find yourself calling an AC repair service more often than normal. Just when you think it’s fixed, it somehow breaks down again not long after. This may be the same problem or different problems.

If you are experiencing any of these problems and you want to get the best deals to replace your AC unit, try waiting until the right season, if possible. Around late September to mid-November and from early March to mid-May are the times when the temperature is cooler, so AC unit prices tend to be lower.
