How to Kill Germs in the Air

Germs are microorganisms that can cause diseases. The categories of germs include bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and fungi. Indoor air has a high risk of contamination with many airborne particles, including germs. However, there is no need to worry because there are many easy ways to kill germs in the air.

Here are some tips you can try:

  • Control the Humidity

Some germs grow well in extremely low humidity, while others grow well in high-moisture environments. If you adjust the humidity level in your home to 40-60%, you will kill many pathogens in your indoor air.

During winter, the humidity level may drop even lower than 10%. On the contrary, humidity tends to be high during the summer. Suppose you live in an area where humidity fluctuates significantly throughout the year.

In that case, you may need to consider investing in humidifier and dehumidifier systems in your house.

  • Invest in a UVGI Lamp

An ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) lamp uses the radiation of the UV-C spectrum to suppress pathogen cells. However, the radiation can be harmful if exposed to human skin and eyes. Close the door to your room and leave it empty when the lamp is on.

Give it as much time as suggested to let the lamp finish the job of purifying your indoor air. This process may produce ozone, which can harm your respiratory system. To clear it out, you must leave the windows and doors open for a few minutes after turning the lamp off.

  • HEPA Filters and UV Air Purifier

Another way of utilizing UVGI technology to kill germs in the air is by using an air purifier with HEPA filtration and UV light technologies. A HEPA filter blocks the germs and retains them to prevent them from flying through the air.

Meanwhile, UV-C radiation will inactivate them by breaking their cells. This appliance might be even more convenient than a UVGI lamp because the light is hidden inside the air purifier unit, preventing it from being exposed to human skin and eyes.

Debunking Myths

Besides humidity controlling and air purifying, some people believe that burning sage and using specific types of essential oils may also kill germs in the air. However, these claims are never proven effective.

Although it is proven to kill most bacteria, burning sage doesn’t kill viruses and other types of pathogens. Also, this method works only if the room is confined. Considering that burning sage will produce heavy smoke, you might develop major respiratory problems from burning sage in an enclosed room.

Essential oils, on the other hand, may reduce the symptoms of virus-caused illnesses like cough or flu. However, there is no sufficient evidence that diffusing essential oils can kill germs in the air.

Germs can cause many health issues, including the common flu, allergies, and COVID-19.

You can prevent your family from getting sick by keeping your indoor air disinfected regularly. It also helps to keep your room and body clean at all times, so your air purifier won’t have many germs to get rid of.
