Air-Conditioner Cover: Is It Necessary?

Sometimes you might see air conditioner covers being sold at shops. You may be wondering whether or not you should buy one.

The short answer is no.

AC covers are usually marketed as protection against dust, debris, moisture, and extreme weather. But there are better ways to resolve those concerns. On top of that, using an AC cover may pose a risk rather than resolving any issues. If you decide to buy one anyway, at least make sure you know which one is safe to pick.

What You Need to Know About Outdoor AC Units

Any outdoor AC unit was designed to withstand outdoor weather, including freezing winters and scorching hot summers. Thus, even without a cover, your outdoor AC unit will be fine. There is no such thing as an outdoor AC unit breaking down due to exposure to snow or sunlight. And as for the dust and debris, only a massive buildup will be enough to affect the machine.

The Risks of Using AC Covers

Most manufacturers even discourage customers from covering up their outdoor AC units. Instead of being beneficial, an AC cover might put the machine at a bigger risk.

One of the common reasons people give for covering their AC is preventing moisture from getting into the machine. However, this logic is highly flawed. Even with a cover, the unit will still get exposed to moisture from the ground as well as the space between the cover linings. But since the cover restricts airflow and sun exposure, that moisture will get trapped instead.

Another risk comes when you turn on the AC while the outdoor unit is covered. If this happens, the system will fail to dissipate heat. Thus, the machine will overheat in just a short time. If this continues, your system will break down pretty quickly.

How to Protect and Maintain Outdoor AC Unit Without Cover

An outdoor AC unit can protect itself from harsh weather and extreme temperatures. As long as you don’t put it too close to the walls or other objects, it will be fine.

What you really need to do to prevent problems with your system is perform regular maintenance. Getting your whole system checked and cleaned every six months will help you avoid dirt buildup and many other concerns.

When Is It Necessary to Use an Air Conditioner Cover?

The only time it may make sense to use an air conditioner cover is during a hailstorm or blizzard. Yet even during these times, you need to open up the cover after the turmoil ends. If possible, use a cover only to protect the top surface of the unit. Leave the sides open to allow airflow.

Also, you shouldn’t turn on your AC when the cover is still on the unit. Make sure to take it off before starting your system again.

An air conditioner cover is not an instant solution to protect your system. There is no need to waste your money on it. If you’re still not convinced, consult the manufacturer of your unit to make sure.
