What Are HVAC Systems?

Nowadays, HVAC systems are considered essential for many people. It is getting more common to find buildings with one installed, especially in a big city.  More than that, property prices now also depend on what HVAC systems are installed.

Because this system becomes even more crucial over time, you will need to understand what  an HVAC system is and how it affects a building.

Definition

HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. As its name suggests, this system is a combination of indoor thermal control, air circulation system, and any other related equipment installed in a building.

With an HVAC system, people can adjust their comfort and improve their wellbeing. However, since the system can be very costly and energy-consuming, managing an HVAC system in a building can be challenging. That is why people need to consider it carefully.

What is Included with HVAC Systems?

The composition of equipment included in an HVAC system can be different from building to building. It depends on various factors, such as needs, budget, building size, and personal preferences.

In the heating category, the product can either be a furnace, a heat pump, a boiler, an in-floor heater, or any other type of heater.

In the air conditioner category, the product can either be a central AC, a mini-split, a portable AC, or any other type of AC unit.

In the ventilation category, there can be ceiling fans, exhaust fans, air handlers, blowers, ventilated facade systems, and many other things.

An HVAC system may also include other equipment that may improve human comfort and safety regarding the thermal and air situation. Some examples include:  air purifiers, additional air filters, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, air quality meters, thermostats, ductwork, and many others.

Types of HVAC Systems

In general, there are two types of an HVAC systems: a central system and a decentralized one. A central system is common in large buildings, while a decentralized one  mostly applies to apartments and small houses.

A central system means having ductwork and one unit of each component installed to distribute the air to every room in the building. It usually has one dedicated space to store the units. In the centralized system, all rooms will get the same air and thermal treatment.

On the contrary, a decentralized system has no ductwork. Each room has its own systems. Thus, people can individually control the state of the air and temperature in it as they please without significantly affecting other rooms.

Which HVAC System Do I Need?

As discussed before, each building has its unique situation. Thus, no one system fits all perfectly. You need to go through each category and do adequate research before deciding whether it is worth installing or not. Here are some examples:

  • Buildings in tropical climates might not need a heating system.
  • Buildings in a highly polluted city may require an air purifying system.
  • Buildings with varying room requirements may need to choose the decentralized systems.

If you have any questions, you can hire a professional HVAC consultant to get the best recommendation. The company will discuss your situation, send a certified worker to inspect your property, and  reach back out to you  with professional suggestions.
