15 Solutions for Improving the Indoor Air Quality in Your House

According to CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission), the air inside a house can contain more pollution than the outdoor air of a heavily industrialized city. This may happen if you fail to take care of your house properly. However, high-quality indoor air is vital for the well-being of your family.

Improving the indoor air quality is not very difficult. There are plenty of simple tips that could be effective. Here are some examples:

  1. Change your AC filter regularly to remove the accumulating airborne particles.
  2. Keep your floor and furniture clean by sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, or cleaning using any method. The dust on the surface might blow up into the air and get inside your body as you breathe it in.
  3. Invest in a proper ventilation system to allow air circulation. It is crucial to let dirty indoor air leave the house and let the cleaner fresh air from outside enter.
  4. Open your windows every once in a while to allow better air circulation.
  5. Have some plants inside and around your house to provide fresh air while also neutralizing the contaminated air.
  6. Don’t let anyone smoke in your house. The toxins from cigarette smoke can stay in surfaces and indoor air circulation for quite some time.
  7. Avoid using harsh chemicals as your household cleaning agents due to their high toxin content. Switch to ones with natural ingredients if possible.
  8. Groom your pets regularly. Their dander and fur might get stuck in your air filter and contaminate your indoor air. This can cause allergic reactions in some people.
  9. Invest in an air purifier system to improve your indoor air quality even more.
  10. Deep clean your carpet regularly. If this is too much for you, it is better to get rid of the carpet. There is too much dust, allergens, and pollutants resting in there.
  11. Change your floor mats and curtains regularly for the same reason as above.
  12. Clean your bedding to clear out the dust mites, debris, and dead skin cells. Change the bedsheets every week. Perform a deep cleaning every once in a while. If your bed lies on the floor, lift it every afternoon to prevent mold growth.
  13. Avoid using aerosol products because they may contain toxic chemicals that can cycle in your indoor air. If breathed in consistently, the pollutants may lead to cancer in the long run.
  14. Have some house plants. They are effective in producing oxygen and filtering out pollutants.
  15. Never allow anyone wearing outdoor shoes inside the house as they carry dirt, which can get into the indoor air cycle. If you need indoor footwear, use a pair of house slippers instead.

Dirty indoor air may lead to various health issues, especially respiratory and allergy problems. If you or any of your family members experience such issues, try putting more effort into improving your indoor air quality. Sometimes, cleaner air to breathe in can effectively resolve these problems for good.
