Air Quality

5 HVAC Devices That Can Improve Your Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is an important matter to consider because it affects your family’s well-being, both in the short and long term. When you feel like natural efforts are not enough to keep your IAQ at a healthy level, maybe it is time to consider investing in some HVAC devices to improve it. Here are some of the most useful HVAC devices you can consider buying:

1 – Air Purifier

The most effective device to remove impurities from your indoor air is the air purifier, especially a whole-home system. There are various types of filters and technology to use in an air purifier for different types of impurities. Here are some of them:

  • HEPA filter: to block smaller particulate matters up to 2.5 microns
  • UV-C lights: to kill microorganisms like viruses and bacteria
  • Ionization technology: to neutralize odors and fumes

To make sure you buy the most effective air purifier for your situation, you need to determine what kinds of impurities in your house are most concerning. Then, buy the air purifier unit with the right technology to remove whatever those are.

2 – Humidifier and Dehumidifier

Humidifiers and dehumidifiers serve opposite purposes, but both aim for better IAQ. A humidifier works in dry climates or in winter by increasing the moisture level in your indoor air. On the contrary, a dehumidifier strips off excess moisture during summer when the air is warm and too humid. A healthy level of humidity is around 35-45%. Anything below or above that range may trigger the growth of microorganisms and allergens.

3 – Air Conditioner

Thermal discomfort may sap energy, which leads to fatigue and dropping the immune system. AC helps to improve IAQ by providing thermal comfort in your indoor air, allowing you and your family to relax and sleep better. AC units also have filters that could block airborne particles, although they are not as effective as an air purifier.

4 – IAQ Monitor

An indoor air quality monitor doesn’t directly improve your air quality. However, the device gives reports about your indoor air so you know what needs to improve. This kind of device usually monitors the levels of humidity, temperature, particulate matter, carbons, and even radon in your home. Each unit of the IAQ monitor has different specifications. So if you want to buy one, make sure it measures everything you’re concerned about.

5 – Whole-House Ventilation System

When natural ventilation is not enough to keep your indoor air at a healthy level, you can consider installing a whole-house ventilation system. This technology uses fans and ducts in a mechanical arrangement to pull stale air from indoor to outdoor and supply fresh air from outside to your house. The system requires custom calculations and settings for each house to make it effective.

Many people think that indoor air is always clean and free from pollution. Unfortunately, this is a big misconception. Some indoor air might be even more polluted, especially if your home has poor circulation. If you haven’t paid much attention to the IAQ in your home, now is a good time to start.
