How to Cool Yourself Without Air Conditioning

What would you do if your air conditioner broke down in the middle of a hot, summer day?

The last thing any homeowner would want is a broken or damaged air conditioner when the weather is hot. The first step, though, is to call a professional technician to get the unit repaired immediately. However, there are some simple tricks to cool yourself down while waiting for your A/C unit to get fixed. Here’s a list of what you can do to handle the heat and make your home cool and comfortable:

1. Close/Shut and Cover the Windows During Daytime

If the air outside the house is hotter than the air inside, it is best to close the windows and cover them with curtains. For homes that get almost 80% of sunlight throughout the day, colored drapes and curtains, as well as blinds, are a perfect option for covering the windows. This will not only block the sunlight and its heat from coming in, but will also keep the rooms a little cooler.

2. Open the Windows at Nighttime

The air outside your home is cooler at night, especially during the summer season. This is the perfect time to let the night air come in and cool down the rooms in your home. Take advantage of the cooler outdoor air to reduce heat and to save on energy.

3. Use the Fan

While waiting for the AC to get fixed, this is the right time to make the most out of your electric fans at home. If you have ceiling fans, see to it that they are moving in a counter-clockwise rotation to pull up the warm air and send down the cooler air. If you have other fans in the room, you can also switch them on to help the air move throughout the room.

4. . Turn Off the Lights If Not In Use

When lights are on, they bring heat into a  room. To cool down the area while the AC system is being repaired, it is best to turn off the lights if not needed. Moreover, you can be selective with the types of lights being used in your home. The CFL (compact fluorescent lamps) and LED (light-emitting diode) lights are known to release less heat.

5. Take a Shower and Stay Hydrated

A cool shower in the daytime and at night helps lower  the body temperature. Also, make sure that your inner body is hydrated throughout the day. If you think you sweat more even without doing extreme activities, drink more than 8 glasses of water every day. Wearing breathable fabrics will also help the body feel comfortable, especially when sleeping.

6. Reduce Heat Generation Inside the House

Using an oven, gas range, stove, dryer, dishwasher, flat iron, and other kitchen appliances generates heat inside the house. If the air conditioner is not functional enough to offset the heat, it is best to wait until the nighttime or when it is cooler outside before using these heat-generating appliances.

While cooling yourself down without the use of a broken air conditioner, see to it that a technician is already contacted for immediate service.
