Leakage on the ductwork can damage your HVAC system. While large leaks are easy to spot, the tiny ones are challenging because they are hard to see. Fortunately, there is a technology called the Aeroseal System.
An Aeroseal system is a technology that seals your ductwork leak from the inside using an aerosol-based spray. Produced by the same name company, the spray can cover small to medium holes up to 5/8″ in diameter.
The system uses a small, powerful compressor to deliver the aerosol-based sealant into your ductwork. The sealant then bonds to the metal surfaces of your ducts, forming a long-lasting, airtight seal.
Benefits of an Aeroseal System:
Saves energy: By sealing your ductwork, you can prevent up to 30% of your home’s heating and cooling energy from being lost through duct leaks.
Improves indoor air quality: By sealing your ductwork, you can also help improve your indoor air quality by preventing outside air from entering your home through duct leaks.
Reduces noise: By sealing your ductwork, you can also help reduce the amount of noise that travels through your ductwork.
The application begins by closing the register with foam blocks to keep the aerosol inside. Then, your Aeroseal technician will connect the sealing machine using a plastic tube to your ductwork. Once secured, the spraying process may begin.
It takes no time for the aerosol mist to spread throughout the ductwork. The chemical compound can find the leaks and fill them up automatically within seconds.
Using the Aeroseal system is very helpful. Here are some of the benefits:
The main chemical used by Aeroseal is vinyl acetate polymer, the same ingredient used for bubble gum. As a result, it is non-flammable and non-toxic. Even better, it is also mold resistant.
Compared to manual leakage fixes, using Aeroseal is much faster and effortless. The whole process takes less than a day.
The Aeroseal application process uses a computer to monitor the whole process. At the end of the task, the technician will conduct a test to measure the energy efficiency difference before and after the sealing process. Undoubtedly, Aeroseal is highly effective in reducing energy waste by eliminating leaks.
According to the test conducted by the company, the Aeroseal system can last up to 40 years if you maintain your HVAC system well. The company also provides a guarantee of up to 10 years.
The Aeroseal system is not perfect. There are several drawbacks that you need to consider before deciding if the system is still worth investing in, such as:
Compared to manual sealing, Aeroseal can cost up to four times more. This factor is not easily ignorable, especially if you have a limited budget. If you are in a condition where you can’t afford the hassle and extended period of manual sealing, then Aeroseal would be worth it.
Unless you are sure that your ductwork doesn’t have holes exceeding 5/8″, then Aeroseal might not be effective. The sealant will not be strong enough to cover such large openings. If leaks are in various sizes, you must get the large holes taken care of first before conducting an Aeroseal treatment.
Ductwork leakage is widespread in the US. While Aeroseal might not always be the best option for your situation, this system is worth considering. If you have any doubts, ask your HVAC technician for recommendations.
