AC Troubleshooting Guide Before Calling a Professional Service

You shouldn’t experiment with your AC unit by trying to fix a complex issue without proper certification. Leaving it to a professional is the best option. But sometimes, an AC problem is so simple that you can fix it yourself without having to hire a technician. If you encounter a problem with your AC unit, try these AC troubleshooting tips first before calling for help:

1.   Check the Thermostat Setting

Always check your thermostat first for any AC issues. Many cases of airflow problems have a very simple culprit: the wrong thermostat setting. People sometimes get mixed up between the heat/cool setting, especially those who live in parts of the world that experience all four seasons. There are also sometimes errors with the calibration, so you might need to try recalibrating it. Another possibility is that the mode has been switched to “fan only” by accident.

2.   Change the Batteries

Another possibility is that the battery is too weak. Thus, the thermostat can still stay on but fails to work properly. Try replacing it with new batteries and reset it to see if your AC problems persist.

3.   Check the Filter

Dirty air filters are the most common thing preventing an AC unit from performing optimally. Problems from dirty air filters could be warm airflow, ice formation on the unit, overheating, or many other things. Ideally, air filters should be replaced every six months. You may need to do it sooner if your indoor air quality is generally poor.

4.   Check the Electricity

If your AC unit won’t run at all, try checking if there is electricity flowing to the unit. Try checking the socket your AC unit is plugged into to see if it still works. If there is no problem with the socket, try opening your panel. If your circuit breaker has tripped, you need to switch it back to on. A tripping circuit breaker usually happens after a power outage or due to an unstable electrical charge.

5.   Take a Look at the Outdoor Unit

Many people ignore the outdoor unit, but it is prone to getting blocked by plant debris and dirt. This may cause surging energy bills, overheating, frequent breakage, and inadequate cooling. You need to make sure there is no debris blocking it if you want your system to run well. Give it proper maintenance and clean it regularly so it maintains its performance. Not every AC problem is serious. Many times, the culprit is simple enough to solve almost effortlessly. But overall, regular maintenance can help you prevent any AC problems, from relatively mild ones to fatal ones. If you don’t have a schedule for your regular AC maintenance, it is time to start calling a professional HVAC service to get it arranged. Not only can it prevent future problems, but it will also help you save a lot of money in the long run.
