FACTS ABOUT INDOOR AIR POLLUTION

Indoor air pollution consists of toxic gases or particles that can harm your health. These pollutants build up rapidly indoors to levels much higher than those outdoors. Homes and buildings are being built more air tight than ever in order to increase heating and cooling efficiency and an unintended effect is that with less outdoor air “leaking” into the indoor space, airborne organisms and other contaminants can accumulate. As a result the air conditioning and ventilation system now has an increased role in maintaining indoor air quality.

ECM recommends adding UV disinfection to your air conditioning unit, along with changing your filters regularly, and properly maintaining and cleaning your air conditioning system with a tune-up at least once a year.

Below are some tips on how to keep your indoor air pollution under control.
1. Install a UV light system
2. Declare you home a smoke free zone
3. Have your A/C inspected once a year
4. Use an air filter with the Minimum Efficiency Rating Value(MERV) of 8 or higher.
5. Keep air ducts clean and dry
6. Keep temperatures between 72-76 degrees to control mold growth
7. Select non-aerosol and non-toxic products with minimal chemical solvents and VOC’s
8. Store all household cleaning products in your garage
9. Install exhaust fans in bathrooms to remove moisture and chemicals from the house
10. Keep humidity levels low(between 40-60%) with a dehumidifier or air conditioner    capable of maintaining a low humidity level to prevent growth of mold.
11. Do not use pesticides indoors
12. Vacuum and wipe all surfaces regularly
13. Open windows when possible to allow for a good supply of outdoor air
14. Wash bedding at least once a week in hot water above 130 degrees to kill dust mites.
